The day our pool reopened for the summer, all my kids wanted to do was to jump in. Can we go now? No. Why not? It’s very cold and the water is not ready yet. Can you heat the pool? Yes. Now? No.
It went on and on, until 5 days later, they finally went in.
Well, soon after, someone was c-c-c-cold.
The dogs were smarter.
Soon, they ran for the shower, a very hot one at that 😀
Thankfully we have a salt water pool which requires less maintenance and even fewer chemicals. I am quite new to salt water pool myself, but I have learned a lot during my research in the past couple of months. Let me give you some heads up:
Once you have added the pool salt in to the water, its chlorine generator uses that salt to generate chlorine.
Salt water pools are great on your skin, they make it soft. It also does NOT cause red itchy eyes or skin, conditions that are normally associated with chlorinated pools.
You don’t have to spend a bomb in buying those big chemical tumblers that you need for regular pools. Though they are more expensive to put in, they are a lot economical in the long run. Of course, you still need weekly maintenance – cleaning up the filters, checking chlorine and pH levels etc. You might also need to ‘shock’ the pool to get its chlorine level up to mark (or when it becomes cloudy after use, rain, or adding stabilizer). But tha’s not frequent, the generators normally take care of the rest. Most of the current chlorine generators come with that setting that sends it into an overdrive to produce enough chlorine that balances out the chlorine content.
My conclusion is if you are considering getting a new pool or some major changes in your existing swimming pool, you should definitely consider salt water pool. You will still need a couple of things like stabilizer to maintain the pH balance, but it is much more cleaner and healthier.
The pool we acquired with our property is about 10 years old, and is in absolutely pristine condition. The water condition was so good that the serviceman said our pool was going to be ready to use in about 24 hours! (people have waited for a month after opening to be able to use the pool). This can only be possible by proper weekly maintenance. No matter what kind of pool you have, checking it for alkalinity, pH balance and cleaning out filters will go a long way in ensuring longevity of the pool.
